About TSI

Introduction

The Transportation Safety Institute (TSI) is a cost recovery agency whose parent organization is the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology (OST-R) within the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). TSIs Strategic Plan commits the Institute to its continuing mission of developing and providing world-class safety, security, and environmental training, products, and/or services for both public and private sectors.

TSI was established in 1971 to assist DOT modal administrations accomplish their mission essential training requirements. Since its inception, TSI has expanded its clientele to keep up with the needs of the Department and transportation industry. The Institute offers premier transit, aviation, motor carrier, highway safety, hazardous materials, risk management, and other training nationally and internationally.

Training Divisions

Aviation Safety Division

Home of the National Aircraft Accident Investigation School, we provide premiere training in instrument flight procedures, aviation   safety and accident investigation techniques and management through workshops, field activities, individual studies and hands-on training.  Courses cover aviations most current information in all aspects of civil and public aviation accident investigation and flight procedures. Overall the Aviation Safety Division currently manages sixteen courses; seven Instrument Flight Procedures training courses and nine courses in aviation safety and accident investigation management.

Multi-Modal Safety Division

A newly formed division that combines two pre-existing divisions of TSI Hazardous Materials and Motor Carrier. The Division provides a variety of transportation safety related courses to federal, state and private industry audiences including hazardous materials, risk management, and motor carrier compliance. In addition, we provide a myriad of other products and services including course development, program management, and event scheduling.

Traffic Safety Division

Develops and delivers highway safety training programs for local, state, and federal highway professionals to include occupant protection, law enforcement, impaired driving, emergency medical services, and comprehensive traffic safety program management training.  Operations also include three levels of training for National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations (NHTSA) National Automotive Sampling System field personnel in support of crash research.

Transit Safety And Security Division

As a steward for the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), the Transit Safety and Security Division is responsible for equipping transportation employees with the core competencies they need to operate, maintain, and manage public transportation systems. Through the use of both instructor-led training and instructional e-learning technologies, the Division develops and delivers innovative and responsive training courses to meet the needs of today’s changing transit industry.

*Container Inspection Training and Assistance Team (CITAT): Although not a formal part of TSI, CITAT is an active tenant and maintains a close relationship with TSI.  A U.S. Coast Guard detachment, CITAT provides training and technical assistance to units and other federal, state and local agencies on hazardous material transportation regulations and intermodal container inspection standards.

International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET)

IACET International Association for Continuing Education & Training

TSI has been accredited as an Authorized Provider by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET).  In obtaining this accreditation, the TSI has demonstrated that it complies with the ANSI/IACET Standard which is recognized internationally as a standard of good practice. As a result of their Authorized Provider status, TSI is authorized to offer IACET CEUs for its programs that qualify under the ANSI/IACET Standard.

Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX)

TEEX’s OSHA Training Institute Southwest Education Center, a Region VI OSHA Education Center, provides high-quality, affordable training to the safety and health community. Last year, TEEX provided training and technical assistance to more than 209,000 people in the United States and around the world.

Center for Urban Transportation Research (CUTR)

CUTR, located at the University of South Florida in Tampa, offers valuable transit training opportunities to Florida's transportation professionals.  These opportunities include transit safety and security training through CUTR's partnership with TSI.
