2015 Right of Way Fatality and
Trespass Prevention Workshop

Trespassing along railroad rights-of-way is the leading cause of rail-related deaths in America. Nationally, more than 400 trespass fatalities occur each year, and nearly as many injuries. The vast majority of these are preventable. By definition, trespassing on railroad property is illegal.

The Federal Railroad Administration’s (FRA) Highway-Rail Grade Crossing Safety and Trespass Prevention Program team is committed to preventing and reducing trespassing.

In 2012, FRA and the Federal Transit Administration sponsored a ROW Fatality and Trespass Prevention Workshop in St. Louis, MO. Building upon a similar event in 2008, these workshops were the first to bring together multiple rail stakeholders including transit, freight, and commuter railroads to focus on common problems surrounding ROW fatality and trespass prevention and develop effective solutions.

Based on the success of the these gatherings, FRA is conducting another workshop on August 4-6, 2015, at the Sheraton Charlotte Hotel in Charlotte, North Carolina. The goal of this free workshop is to identify and share existing industry best practices and explore new trespass abatement and mitigation strategies that the rail industry can adopt to reduce the number of right-of-way and trespasser incidents and fatalities. The conference agenda is currently being developed by a team of industry experts and will cover five key areas:

  • Community Outreach
  • Enforcement
  • Design, Technology, and Infrastructure
  • Intentional Acts/Deaths
  • Pedestrian Safety
