Topic: Lithium Batteries

NTSB Recommendation: Require that packages containing lithium batteries be identified as hazardous materials, including appropriate marking and labeling of the packages and proper identification in shipping documents, when transported on aircraft.

PHMSA Action: Closed

Latest PHMSA Response: PHMSA and FAA are reviewing current testing requirements of the UN Transport of Dangerous Goods Manual of Tests and Criteria and regulatory requirement with input from industry. PHMSA published an Advisory Notice in the Federal Register on 09/07/00 regarding the Transportation of Lithium Batteries.
