Topic: Lithium Batteries

NTSB Recommendation: Require aircraft operators that transport hazardous materials to immediately provide consolidated and specific information about hazardous materials on board aircraft, including proper shipping name, hazard class, quantity, number of packages, and location, to on-scene emergency responders upon notification of an accident or incident.

PHMSA Action: In a final rule, under Docket HM-215J, published January 14, 2009, PHMSA amended the HMR to require aircraft operators provide specific and consolidated information about hazardous materials onboard an aircraft to emergency responders. The HMR were also amended to require incident reporting of batteries and battery-powered devices.
