The Secretary of Transportation has authorized the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) to make grant funds available in the amount of $4 million per fiscal year to train instructors for the purpose of training hazardous materials employees. Grant funds will be made available to non-profit organizations that demonstrate: 1) expertise in conducting a training program for hazmat employees and 2) the ability to reach and involve, in a training program, a target population for hazmat employees.
Since its introduction in 2008, the HMIT grant program has awarded grant funds to non-profit organizations to include, but not limited to the: International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, International Brotherhood of Teamsters, National Labor College, and International Chemical Workers Union.
PHMSA encourages any non-profit organization, which meets the criteria prescribed above, to apply for the HMIT grant.
The HMIT Grants Program is open to non-profit hazardous materials employee organizations demonstrating: (1) expertise in conducting a training program for hazmat employees, and (2) the ability to reach a target population of hazmat employees. For the purposes of the HMIT Grants program, an "employee organization" is a labor union, association, group, or similar organization the members of which are hazardous materials employees and the stated purpose of which is to represent hazmat employees. .
