Meeting Information
Status Completed
Starts Mar  5, 2008

Purpose & Summary

The purpose of this workshop was to educate pipeline operators about a Joint Industry-Government Project to provide next generation technologies for ROW Surveillance in order to reduce 3rd-party damage and encroachment.

Results
Additional Information

In 2006, PHMSA and BP Pipelines conducted research into similar technologies to evaluate new aerial surveillance technologies and to detect earth-moving machinery on or near a pipeline ROW. Preliminary tests in 2007 have shown these technologies are a potential solution to improving ROW surveillance. Damage prevention is a critical concern to both PHMSA and the pipeline industry.

Since these preventive technologies can be utilized by the entire industry, your participation in requirements gathering, research and testing will ensure a viable solution is developed which meets industry requirements. Participation in this meeting is voluntary.

The overall mission of this one-day meeting is to:
  • Understand the current state of surveillance practices as well as remote sensing R&D efforts in the government and private sector;
  • Clarify the vision for remote sensing on multiple platforms;
  • Learn about the SENTRI-LD project and discuss interest in participating on the project team; and
  • Determine next steps.
