Woman Pleads Guilty and is Sentenced for Distributing Unregistered Pesticides

Summary

On September 29, 2010, Yuqiong Zheng pled guilty and was sentenced in U.S. District Court, Districts of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, Saipan, to two years probation for distributing unregistered pesticides.

In October 2008, when Ms. Zheng arrived in Saipan from China, customs officials noticed a spill inside the large sack containing the smaller packets of pesticides.  The investigation revealed that Ms. Zheng knowingly transported several hundred packets of Buprophezin, an unregistered pesticide designated by the Secretary of the Department of Transportation as hazardous for air transportation.

This investigation was conducted jointly by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency/CID, with assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard Investigative Service, Federal Aviation Administration, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Divisions of Environmental Quality, Customs, and Quarantine Office.
