Summary

On November 4, Adam Babul, Chicago, IL, was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Chicago to 41 months in federal prison followed by 36 months supervised release for his role in a conspiracy to fraudulently obtain CDLs. Babul, owner of Bamba, Inc. (a firm providing assistance to individuals seeking legal documents and legal status in the United States) found guilty of conspiracy by a federal jury in June 2005. Three other defendants pled guilty as co-conspirators and were sentenced in October 2005 to varying periods of probation. Investigation revealed that the defendants guaranteed CDL certification to Illinois residents in exchange for cash payments of about $2,000 each. CDL applicants were transported to and established Wisconsin bank accounts using a fraudulent Wisconsin address. The bank account documentation served as proof of residency for Wisconsin CDL applications. The CDL applicants were also assisted by a language translator supplied by Bamba, Inc., who provided answers to CDL test questions at the examination site. This investigation was conducted jointly with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
