NHTSA picks new name for NASS replacement, publishes RFP to implement new crash data collection system 

May 27, 2014: In FY 2012, Congress appropriated $25 million to NHTSA to modernize the National Automobile Sampling System (NASS). NASS has provided nationally representative traffic crash information to the highway safety community NHTSA for over 30 years. However the data needs of the traffic safety community have increased and significantly changed since NASS was initially design. NHTSA is designing a new crash data collection system to replace NASS that will meet the current and future data needs of highway safety community. NHTSA has named the two new data collection systems:

• NHTSA’s Crash Investigation Sampling System (CISS) replaces the NASS CDS and
• NHTSA’s Crash Report Sampling System (CRSS) replaces the NASS GES.

NHTSA has reached another important milestone for the Data Modernization project and published a RFP to solicit professional services to provide timely, efficient, effective support to NHTSA in the management of the new data collection system.
