The Research & Development Branch leads and coordinates innovative research projects that are focused on near-term solutions to hazardous materials transportation problems.

Strategic Framework

Vision: To promote innovative approaches to support the safe commerce of hazardous materials for a multi-modal transportation system

Mission: To provide research, analyses and technical information needed to manage the public risk associated with hazardous material transportation

Goal: The goal of the Hazardous Materials Safety's Research & Development program is to develop and implement safety solutions that enhance the Agency's safety mission.

People

The staff of the Research and Engineering Branch performs all tasks associated with managing the R&D Program within the Office of Hazardous Material Safety. The R&D projects are conducted by a number of internal and external research partners, and in cooperation with other Office of Hazardous Safety Divisions. They prepare statements of work and requests for proposals. They develop milestones and meeting deliverables from laboratory testing, to piloting, to field implementation. They provide technical support within the R&&D Program to identify potential emerging risks and challenges to the safe transport of hazardous materials and provides fiscal oversight of concurrent diverse projects within their areas of responsibility.
