Summary

On October 28, USA Remediation Services, Inc. (URSI), Warrenton, VA, pled no contest in U.S. District Court in Buffalo, NY to a felony charge of violating the Clean Air Act and conspiracy to violate the Clean Air Act. In addition, URSI employee Corey Seamon pled guilty to a charge of perjury for lying to a grand jury regarding his role in asbestos removal. As part of a $4.3 million demolition contract awarded by the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (an FAA grantee), URSI was awarded a $981,000 subcontract in 1999 for removal of asbestos at an industrial facility adjacent to the Buffalo–Niagara Airport.

URSI, Seamon, and company supervisors Mark Jamieson and Robert Birmingham were indicted in September 2002 on numerous charges related to illegal removal of asbestos from pipes in the building. URSI and Seamon are scheduled to be sentenced on February 3, 2006. The two former supervisors pled guilty previously and received jail terms. The investigation was conducted jointly with the EPA–CID, FBI, and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
