Ohio Man Charged with Providing Fraudulent Overweight State Permits

Summary

On January 27, 2016, the U.S. District Attorney’s Office in Columbus, OH, filed a criminal complaint charging Shadd Hiles, the owner of Permit Guys Consulting, of Crooksville, OH, with false statements and wire fraud. The charges related to a scheme to defraud over-the-road trucking companies by providing fraudulent overweight state permits.

Permit Guys Consulting served the trucking industry by obtaining overweight permits required for each state along a motor carrier’s intended route of travel. Proper permitting is required in an effort to ensure safe passage of the oversized loads. The issuance of overweight and oversized permits is delegated to individual states. FHWA is responsible for certifying state compliance with Federal standards, including certification regarding the number of overweight vehicle permits issued.

Shadd Hiles allegedly defrauded over-the-road trucking companies by providing falsified overweight State permits, which were sent via wire communication in interstate commerce.
