MARAD Special Projects Officer Sentenced

Summary

Maritime Administration official Francis Peter O’Connell was sentenced by a U.S. District Court judge in Beaumont, TX to 1 year of probation and ordered to pay a $2,500 fine for receiving unauthorized compensation on a government contract. O’Connell currently is assigned as a special projects officer in MARAD’s Central Region Office in New Orleans. O'Connell pleaded guilty in December 2000 to accepting $3,250 in consulting fees from BGI Enterprise, Inc., on a United States Coast Guard contract to remove abandoned barges from the intercoastal waterways. OIG investigated this case with the FBI, DCIS, and the NCIS.
