L.A. MTA Subway Project: Welding Inspection Service Company Makes Plea Agreement

Summary

Twining Laboratories of Southern California settled a Federal False Claims Act suit by agreeing to pay $375,000 to the Federal Government, $125,000 to the State of California, and $25,000 to the individual who first filed the Qui Tam action. Twining provided weld inspection services in the construction of the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Red Line subway project, but made false claims with respect to the qualifications of its inspectors. William H. Benson, Twining's former Manager of Inspection Services, pled guilty to federal charges last year and will be sentenced in the coming months. OIG investigated the case with the FBI, and the LA MTA.
