Former Engineer Fined for Obstructing Criminal Investigation

Summary

Louis J. Longo, a former Massachusetts Highway Department engineer was fined $3,000 and placed on 18 months probation by a U.S. District Court judge in Boston, MA on charges of obstructing a 1998 criminal investigation. As the state official responsible for approving asphalt deliveries to construction sites, Longo hindered a joint OIG–FBI investigation of Brox Industries, Inc., an asphalt paving company suspected of falsely billing the government for ‘phantom’ loads of asphalt. Brox agreed in March to pay a $200,000 fine.
