Freight Forwarder Pleads Guilty to Hazardous Waste Violations

Summary

Universal Freightways, Inc., (UFI) a Miami, FL, freight forwarder, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Miami to illegally storing hazardous wastes, including dangerous corrosives and flammables such as hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, and toluene. UFI admitted that it failed to follow Federal regulations regarding the proper transportation or disposal of hazardous waste and stored the waste at a facility that did not have the required permit. The investigation was conducted by OIG, EPA’s Criminal Investigations Division, and the Dade County Environmental Task Force.
