Flight Instructor Pleads Guilty for Falsely Claiming to Hold Valid FAA Certificate

Summary

Douglas Lee Pavelka pled guilty in U.S. District Court in Dayton, OH to a criminal charge of falsifying FAA an ‘Instructor’s Recommendation’ which indicated that his Flight Instructor Certificate was valid. Pavelka admitted to altering the expiration dates on his FAA-issued ‘Flight Instructor Certificate’ and ‘Medical Certificate’, which actually expired in November 1999 and January 2002 respectively; both certificates remained invalid. Between December 1999 and January 2004, Pavelka recommended certification for 34 FAA pilot licenses. FAA has determined that retesting of the applicants is not required, as their certification testing was performed by other FAA designated examiners. Pavelka’s sentencing is scheduled for May 13, 2005.
