FAA Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic Pleads Guilty to Aircraft Parts Fraud

Summary

On August 10, 2010, James Lanier Smith pled guilty to an information in United States District Court, Northern District of Florida, Gainesville Division, for one count of false statement related to making a false entry in an aircraft logbook. 

In the information and plea agreement, Mr. Smith admitted he made a false entry in an aircraft logbook in which he stated that he completed an annual inspection of a Bell L-1 helicopter and certified it airworthy when in fact he did not complete a thorough inspection of the helicopter and the helicopter was not airworthy. 

The plea agreement includes a provision that Mr. Smith will permanently surrender his Aircraft and Mechanics license with Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) ratings and Inspection Authorization (IA). 

Sentencing is set for October 28, 2010.
