U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary E. Peters today announced that Carl T. Johnson was sworn in as the second Administrator of the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA).

"Carl will use his vast experience to make sure that the movement of energy and hazardous materials remains safe, efficient and reliable," Secretary Peters said.

Mr. Johnson was nominated for the post by President Bush on Oct. 30 and received U.S. Senate confirmation on Dec. 19.

Johnson comes to the department having served as a president of the Compressed Gas Association.  Prior to this he served as special assistant to Representative Amory Houghton of New York.  Earlier in his career, he served as director of federal government relations at Corning Glass Works.

Johnson received his bachelor's degree from Cornell University and his master's degree from The George Washington University.  He and his wife, Joyce, reside in Virginia.  They have two grown children.
