Krista L. Edwards Named Deputy Administrator for Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration

U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Mary E. Peters announced today that Krista L. Edwards has been appointed the Deputy Administrator of the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA). Edwards has served as PHMSA’s Chief Counsel since May 2006.

Prior to joining the department, Edwards was a partner in the Washington, DC, office of Sidley Austin, LLP, where she was a member of the firm’s Transportation and Employment and Labor practice groups.

“Krista has done an outstanding job as PHMSA’s Chief Counsel. Her understanding of transportation issues, commitment to organizational excellence, and team-building leadership style will make her a great asset as she transitions to the Deputy Administrator position,” said Secretary Peters.

As Deputy Administrator, Edwards will assist the PHMSA Administrator in leading the agency, focusing on regulatory matters, enforcement, and legislative policy. PHMSA is the federal regulatory agency with safety oversight of hazardous materials transportation by all modes, including pipelines. PHMSA’s regulations govern the movement of almost 1 million daily shipments of hazardous materials by air, rail, motor carrier, and vessel. The agency also oversees the nation’s natural gas and hazardous liquid pipeline infrastructure, which moves 64 percent of the energy products consumed in the United States.

Edwards received her J.D., with honors, from Northwestern University School of Law in 1988, and a B.A., with honors, from Northern Illinois University in 1984. She and her husband live in Arlington, Virginia with their three children.
