Internal Corrosion Direct Assessment Detection of Water

Main Objective

Develop a method to use with ICDA to detect water in non-piggable lines. This method will be low cost and will entail introduction of small, wireless sensors capable of detecting water inside pipelines that flow with the gas stream.

Public Abstract

Determining the presence and corrosivity of water is an important component of internal corrosion direct assessment of pipelines. The currently available inspection techniques are limited because some cannot be applied to all pipelines and others require prior knowledge of where to locate the sensors and costly pipeline excavation to emplace the sensors. Recently a mobile corrosion sensor technology integrated to a wireless network platform, called motes, has been developed. The technology represents a paradigm shift in monitoring the oil and gas infrastructure with respect to internal corrosion. This proposal addresses the need to develop it further for field deployment and validate the sensor. The proposed effort will focus on (i) packaging the motes-sensor so that the resulting package is robust and can move down a pipe; (ii) demonstrating its ability to send information on location and corrosivity to an external receiver; (iii) solving issues related to power, safety hazards, and operations; and (iv) validating it in the field. The project will be conducted by a team consisting of CC Technologies, southwest Research Institute, and Aginova. The project will be co-funded by Operations Technology Development Company based in Gas Technology Institute, Southern California Gas Company, and BP America.
