Summary

On June 18, 2010, we responded to Senators Grassley and Coburn regarding their April 8, 2010, request that we provide information on the independence necessary to carry out our audits, evaluations, and investigations.  We reported (1) that the Department is generally responsive to our requests for information; (2) a summary of our non-public investigations and management advisories; (3) no instances regarding any threats or attempted obstruction in our ability to communicate with Congress on the budget or other matters; and (4) the number of open recommendations and their associated cost savings estimates, our top three open recommendations, and the number of recommendations implemented since January 5, 2009.
