FAA's FY 2008 Budget Request: Key Issues Facing the Agency

Project ID:
CC-2007-019

Summary

On February 14, the Inspector General testified regarding FAA's FY '08 budget request before the House Transportation Aviation Subcommittee. The Inspector General testified that regardless of the funding mechanism ultimately decided upon by Congress and the Administration, several issues require agency attention and will shape FAA's funding requirements over the next several years. These include: (1) addressing an expected surge in air traffic controller retirements; (2) having sufficient safety inspectors to provide oversight of a dynamic aviation industry; (3) keeping existing modernization efforts on track and reducing risks with the Next Generation Air Transportation System; and (4) using the cost accounting system to improve operations.
