A Student Success Story

Profile photo of Raymond Young

Raymond Young is currently enrolled in the SCEP program. He has been with the Department since September. Young currently works in the Operations, Research and Development office of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

Young is attending George Mason University, pursuing a master's degree in Civil Engineering. He comes from an engineering background, having served in the U.S. Air Force. Employed as a Civil Engineer – SCEP, at the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center (TFHRC) in McLean, Young is currently using Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to support research being conducted onsite at TFHRC. He uses GIS programs to establish a map of TFHRC and the surrounding road network. The office will use the GIS mapping to display data from vehicles and corresponding roadside equipment as the vehicles travel through the TFHRC area.

Young plans to work in the GIS field using his Civil Engineering training. He enjoys his work with DOT and is looking forward to the future of GIS technology. Young says the SCEP program is currently meeting his needs and is glad he can make a contribution to the office. "I get to work with leaders in the field of transportation engineering; and use some of what I'm doing here in my school projects," said Young.
