Awareness & Outreach

Traffic Signal Management Program Plans should address how the progress of the program is reported to agency management, policy makers, elected officials and the public. These communications need not be formal or highly produced but should be concise, factual and closely related to the interest of the public and based on operational objectives. The links below provide examples of awareness and outreach efforts undertaken by state, regional and local agencies to relate the benefits of their traffic signal management, operations and maintenance programs.

For detailed information on lessons learned, cost and deployment statistics related to arterial management and operation the Research and innovative Technology Administration has compiled several databases that are regularly updated. Each database can be browsed by application area; ITS Lessons Learned Knowledge Resource, the ITS Costs Database, the ITS Deployment Statistics Database.

Examples of Awareness and Outreach

  • It's About Time Video - The video, "It's About Time, Traffic Signal Management: Cost-Effective Street Capacity and Safety" (WMV, 24.1MB), demonstrates how signal timing on roads can improve air quality while reducing fuel consumption, decreasing traffic congestion, and saving time for commercial and emergency vehicles. It also shows that retiming can reduce aggressive driving behavior and the number of severe accidents.
