Office of Operations Research and Development (R&D)

The FHWA's Office of Operations Research and Development (R&D) is located at the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center in McLean, VA where it conducts research on the application of cutting-edge technologies to move people and goods better, quicker, and safer. The Office is comprised of two teams, Enabling Technologies and Travel Management, supported by the Transportation Research Laboratory (TReL). The Travel Management Research Program is focused on applied research to develop the next generation of Traffic Management systems and models. The Enabling Technologies Team researches specific technologies that can improve the performance of its services and support to the Intelligent Vehicle Initiative (IVI) and the Cooperative Intersection Collision Avoidance Initiative.
