International Standards

About International Standards

PHMSA participates in a number of international forums as part of the ongoing process of harmonizing the U.S. Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR) with international standards and regulations. Participation ensures that U.S. interests are communicated and considered in the development of international standards. Public comments on positions taken and the outcome of these meetings are solicited through public meetings, outreach activities, and through a number of other media including this page. The objective is to establish and maintain a global regulatory system for hazardous materials transportation that will enhance the safe, secure, and efficient movement of hazardous materials. Harmonization of international and domestic standards enhances compliance and improves the efficiency of the transportation system by minimizing the regulatory burden on the public.
