Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act

Highway Research, Technology Deployment, and Education

On December 4, 2015, President Obama signed into law the Fixing America's Surface Transportation Act, or FAST Act—the first Federal law in more than 10 years to provide long-term funding certainty for surface transportation. The FAST Act authorizes $305 billion for fiscal years 2016 through 2020 for the U.S. Department of Transportation's (USDOT) highway, highway and motor vehicle safety, public transportation, motor carrier safety, hazardous materials safety, rail, and research, technology, and statistics programs. With its enactment, State and local governments may now move forward with critical transportation projects, like new highways and transit lines, with the confidence that they will have a Federal partner over the long term.

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has developed a comprehensive Web site with information about highway-related FAST Act provisions. The Web site, located at http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/fastact/index.cfm, includes fact sheets for each of the FAST Act programs. The site will be updated on a regular basis as implementation progresses. For information on FAST Act provisions that impact other USDOT agencies, visit http://www.transportation.gov/fastact/.

The FHWA produced the Highway Research, Technology Deployment, and Education Questions and Answers below to inform our partners and stakeholders of legislative changes and how they may affect FHWA’s Research and Technology programs. We will add information on a regular basis as implementation progresses, and we invite you to visit the site often.
