2017 SOLAR ECLIPSE Transportation Fact Sheet for State and Local Departments of Transportation

To help the 13 states under the path of the first solar eclipse to transverse the continental United States since 1918, FHWA has prepared the 2017 Solar Eclipse Transportation Fact Sheet for State and Local Departments of Transportation. With approximately 200 million people living within a day's drive of the August 21, 2017 solar eclipse, the fact sheet for State and Local Departments of Transportation was designed to alert state and local DOTs of the eclipse, provide the link for events and festivals to celebrate the event in the 13 states; and if appropriate, to provide information should the states need to develop transportation plans.

This Climate Change Adaptation Guide for Transportation Systems Management, Operations, and Maintenance guide provides information and resources to help transportation management, operations, and maintenance staff incorporate climate change into their planning and ongoing activities. It is intended for practitioners involved in the day-to-day management, operations, and maintenance of surface transportation systems at State and local agencies.

Emergency Vehicle Visibility and Conspicuity Report

The United States Fire Administration (USFA), in partnership with the International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA), announces the release of the Emergency Vehicle Visibility and Conspicuity Study. The study report highlights the results of a U.S. Department of Justice - National Institute of Justice (NIJ) supported project intended to enhance emergency vehicle and roadway operations safety for firefighters, law enforcement officers, and other emergency responders.

This partnership with the International Fire Service Training Association, supported by the U.S. Department of Justice, National Institute of Justice, produced a study on emergency vehicle visibility and conspicuity, and expanded fire service efforts in these areas, to enhance emergency vehicle and roadway operations safety for firefighters, law enforcement officers, and other emergency responders.

This report discusses best practices in emergency vehicle visibility and conspicuity, including cutting edge international efforts. It covers retroreflective striping and chevrons, high-visibility paint, built-in passive light, and other reflectors for law enforcement patrol vehicles, fire apparatus, ambulances and other EMS vehicles, and motorcycles.
