Pennsylvania Truck Driver Involved in Fatal Crash Sentenced for Falsifying Driver’s Logbook

Summary

On November 21, Chad J. Zufall, a former driver for H.R.S. Transport, Inc. (HRS), Phillipsburg, NJ, was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Trenton, NJ to two years probation and fined $750 following his August 2005 guilty plea to a charge of making false statements. In August 2000, Zufall rear-ended a van while he was operating an HRS truck; all four occupants of the van were killed. Subsequent investigation found that Zufall had falsified his logbooks on numerous occasions, but destruction of logbooks at the accident scene precluded a determination of whether or not hours-of-service regulations were violated in this crash. FMCSA, which assisted with the investigation, previously fined HRS $31,800 for the falsified driver logbooks and for violations of drug and alcohol testing programs.
