Audit Initiated of FAA’s Controller Scheduling Policies

Summary

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) employs approximately 14,000 air traffic controllers to operate 316 air traffic control facilities. Optimizing controller schedules is a critical aspect of efficient workforce planning, since inefficient facility scheduling can lead to staffing issues and increased overtime. We are conducting this audit at the direction of the House Appropriations Committee to (1) determine FAA’s progress in adopting and implementing a scheduling tool, and (2) identify any challenges that will need to be addressed to realize potential benefits.
