Summary

We began an audit of NHTSA's efforts to monitor the importation of foreign vehicles that do not comply with Federal motor-vehicle safety standards. We will: (1) evaluate NHTSA’s timeliness in processing applications to import vehicles that do not meet U.S. safety standards and in handling hardship exemptions for military personnel and others, and (2) determine the reasons that importers may be experiencing delays in obtaining NHTSA’s approval to import vehicles.
