FHWA Home / Safety / Strategic Planning

Strategic Planning

The FHWA Office of Safety, Office of Safety Research and Development, and Resource Center Safety and Design Technical Services Team jointly implement a strategic planning process to bring focus to a common safety vision. This vision, together with our mission and goals, are summarized below:

Vision: Zero deaths and serious injuries on the Nation’s roadways.

Mission: Exercise leadership throughout the multidisciplinary highway community to make the Nation's surface transportation system safer for all users.

The Joint Safety Strategic Plan supports the USDOT Strategic Plan and the FHWA Strategic Plan.

FHWA Research and Technology Agenda – Advancing Safety

The Research and Technology Agenda supports the U.S. Department of Transportation's commitment to safety by applying a focused, collaborative, and strategic approach to conducting research and deploying innovations. FHWA is fostering a safety culture and advancing the use of scientific methods and data-driven decisionmaking to anticipate and help prevent events leading to traffic crashes, fatalities, and injuries.
