Tribal Transportation Safety Reports to Congress

The Fixing America's Surface Transportation Act (FAST) section 1117, passed in December 2015, directs the Secretary of Transportation to complete two reports. The full text of FAST Act Section 1117 is available here. The Tribal Transportation Safety Management System Steering Committee is involved in the development of both reports. More information about the committee can be found at http://tribalsafety.org/SMS-Committee/SMS-Committee.

Safety Data Quality, Sharing, and Use

The first report is to describe the quality, sharing, and use of transportation safety data by federally recognized tribes, options for paperless crash reporting, and identification of budgetary resources for improvements to safety data systems. This report is due to Congress by December 2016.

Tribes and states are encouraged to provide input on this report by responding to an online survey or scheduling a phone interview. You can access the online survey at https://survey.max.gov/586164.

A preview of the questions is available here.

A recorded webinar with further information about this project is available here.

Options for Improving Safety on Public Roads

A second report is to identify and evaluate options for improving safety on public roads. This report closely aligns with an effort that was underway by the Tribal Transportation Safety Management System Steering Committee prior to the FAST Act. The committee will continue to be critical to the development of this report.
