How long will the various registrations take after implementation of the Unified Registration System (URS)? When will I get a DOT number?

For new applicants on December 12, 2015, the issuance of a DOT number will be instantaneous. Therefore, there should not be a delay based on FMCSA's systems. Applications for registration can take two weeks if subject to the 10 business day protest period in the FMCSA Register and up to two months if the application has been flagged for vetting by FMCSA.

Beginning January 14, 2017, applicants will receive an inactive USDOT number upon submission of an application for registration.  Operations are prohibited, however, until the applicant receives an active USDOT number and active registration.  Registration will not be granted and the USDOT number will not be active until FMCSA determines that the applicant meets all statutory and regulatory requirements for registration, including requirements for making administrative filings.
