In the fall of 2014, U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx led the Department in a multi-modal collaboration by initiating walk/bike assessments in every state. The walk/bike assessments are being led by FHWA, FTA, NHTSA, FRA, and FMCSA field offices and build upon three pilot assessments - Boston, MA; Dallas/Ft. Worth, TX; and Lansing, MI - completed in the summer of 2014. Consistent with the 2010 USDOT Policy Statement on Bicycle and Pedestrian Accomodation, the modal administrations have a responsibility to improve conditions and opportunities for walking and bicycling in the transportation system. Therefore, in alignment with their technical assistance, funding, project review, and oversight roles, the U.S. DOT modal administrations will convene these events, bringing together State, regional, and local transportation officials and stakeholders for on-the-ground safety assessments.
