National Aircraft Accident Investigation School

In 1963 the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) and Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) created the National Aircraft Accident Investigation School at Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center. The purpose of the school was to provide training for CAB accident investigators, FAA aviation safety inspectors, and members of the aviation industry. In 1971 this training was transferred to the Transportation Safety Institute (TSI), Aviation Safety Division.

Today, TSI continues to be the home of the National Aircraft Accident School. And since 1971, TSI Aviation Alumni have participated in over 124,000* aircraft accident and incident investigations, and in coordination with FAA Safety Initiatives, have also contributed to a 71 percent reduction in the number of yearly aircraft accidents and incidents for the year 2014 compared to the year 1970*.

* These totals and statistics were retrieved on January 26, 2015 from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Aviation Accident Database located at the following web address: http://www.ntsb.gov/_layouts/ntsb.aviation/index.aspx

The Aviation Safety Division provides the following services:

  • Student-centered training in aviation safety and aircraft accident investigation,
  • Technical assistance in accident investigation and aviation safety programs,
  • Course and Curriculum Development, and
  • Custom training solutions geared towards civil and public use aviation safety needs.
