Mid-Atlantic Gateway Office (Washington, DC)
The Mid-Atlantic Gateway Office serves ports in lower New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina. The Director serves as the US Department of Transportation and Maritime Administration’s regional representative, helping coordinate maritime stakeholders for freight and passenger services.
The seaports in the Mid-Atlantic Gateway region access over 60% of the US market, providing service to markets in Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, Ohio, and as far as Illinois. The major ports in the Gateway Region include the Virginia Port Authority in Hampton Roads, Virginia; the Port of Baltimore in Maryland; and the Ports of Wilmington and Morehead City in North Carolina:
- Baltimore is a leader in providing maritime services to the auto industry and for itself a growing container market.
- The Virginia Port Authority has numerous terminals in Hampton Roads that handle both intermodal and breakbulk cargo, as well as the Virginia Inland Port terminal in Front Royal, Virginia. Both ports have terminals with 50-foot access channels.
- North Carolina is growing as a home for freight distribution centers. The Port of Wilmington has four post-Panamax container cranes, new and powerful container-handling equipment, managed by a new terminal operating system to providing connectivity and in-transit visibility to shippers at any time. Wilmington offers excellent general cargo facilities as well, aside from the two inland terminals – Charlotte Inland Terminal and Piedmont Triad Inland Terminal
