The San Diego Furnace Technology Transfer Accelerator is a new startup accelerator launching in Southern California that will transfer technologies from government laboratories into the civilian marketplace.
The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) will make technologies from the portfolio of the Navy’s Space and Naval Warfare (SPAWAR) Systems Center Pacific (SSC Pacific) in San Diego available to entrepreneurs who can turn the technologies into successful businesses, as part of a partnership with Arizona State University (ASU).
SSC Pacific patents and technologies will be made available to entrepreneurs through a regional business model competition held during the next three months. Winning teams will then participate in an intense, nine-month accelerator program designed to produce investment-ready startups at the conclusion of the program.
The DoD has partnered with ASU’s Center of Excellence in Technology Transfer (PACE/T2) which leverages ASU’s Furnace model to support the transfer and commercialization of discoveries from research laboratories. To date, Arizona’s implementation of the Furnace system, over two iterative cycles, has formed, funded, and launched 14 new startup companies from available technologies derived from a number of public universities and private healthcare groups.
