The Electronics Science and Technology Division (ESTD) conducts an innovative and dynamic basic and applied research program in electronic materials science, leading to new technologies and capabilities for the U.S Navy, Marine Corps, and Department of Defense. Our technically diverse staff of surface and materials scientists, theoretical physicists, mechanical and electronics engineers, chemists, and computational physicists reflects the multidisciplinary nature of the Division's research. The synergy that results from the collaboration between these experts allows world-class electronics science and technology to be developed. Our well-equipped laboratories and fabrication facilities provide the research tools needed to move quickly from a flash of inspiration to real-world demonstration.

Our staff comprises approximately 150 full-time employees, contract employees, postdoctoral appointees, faculty researchers, and student participants. Division members engage in close collaborations throughout NRL and with other government organizations, academia, and industry.

In-house efforts include research and development in these areas:

  • Solid-state electronics
  • Investigations of photophysical processes in condensed phase systems using femtosecond laser spectroscopy
  • Space radiation effects studies including radiation hardening of electronic devices
  • Electronic materials including growth, theory, and characterization of semiconductors, heterostructures and nanostructures
  • Surface and interface science
  • Microwave and millimeter-wave components and techniques
  • Nanoelectronics science and technologies
  • Vacuum electronics device, technology, design, fabrication and testing
  • Power electronics materials growth, characterization and device fabrication
  • Development of novel infrared sensing materials including: growth & synthesis, materials analysis, and device fabrication and characterization.
  • Narrow-gap material and device structure design, simulation of optical and electronic transport
  • Plasmonic structures for enhanced optical coupling

The Division has a number of joint efforts with private industry through patent licensing and cooperative research and development agreements.

The ESTD operates seven major modern facilities that are essential to extending the research frontier and support many programs within the Division and throughout the NRL.
