Colonel Andrew S. Hanson - a native of Buffalo, New York, entered the United States Military Academy at West Point, June 1990. He graduated May 1994 with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Infantry. Following his commissioning, he attended and graduated from the Infantry Officers Basic Course and Ranger School and was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He held the positions of rifle platoon leader, mortar platoon leader, company executive officer and, while deployed to the Sinai Peninsula, Egypt, liaison officer.

Colonel Hanson then attended the Infantry Officer Advanced Course, the Combined Arms Service and Staff School and the Special Forces Qualification Course. Upon completion of Special Forces training August 2000, Colonel Hanson was assigned to 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Campbell, Kentucky. There he served as a detachment commander, military free fall detachment commander, assistant operations officer and Headquarters Company commander. In June 2005, Colonel Hanson attended the Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama and graduated with a Master’s degree in Military Arts and Science. He returned to 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) and served as a battalion operations officer and battalion executive officer.

In July 2009, Colonel Hanson was assigned to the United Stated Army Special Operations Command, Special Operations Division at the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. Following that assignment he was assigned as the Special Operations Branch Manager in the Senior Leader Development, Colonels Management Division in Rosslyn, Virginia.

From May 2011 to June 2013, Colonel Hanson served as the Commander of 1st Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne). Following his command, he served as the Assistant Chief of Staff, G3, for the United States Army Special Forces Command until June 2015. Colonel Hanson then attended the United States Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and graduated with a Master’s degree in Military Art and Strategic Studies in June 2016.

Colonel Hanson’s notable awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal with one Silver Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with four Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with one Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Achievement Medal with three Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, Iraqi Campaign Medal with one Silver and one Bronze Campaign Stars, Multinational Force and Observers Medal, United Nations Mission in Haiti Medal, Combat and Expert Infantryman Badges, Master Parachutist Badge, Military Free Fall Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Special Forces Tab, Ranger Tab, President’s Hundred Tab, and the United States Army Distinguished Rifleman Medal.
