November is Native American Heritage Month. Cadet Bryan Dude, of the Apache Nation, tells us what Duty, Honor, Country mean to him.
#NativeAmerican Heritage
"What's the point of succeeding, if succeeding is easy?" I ask myself this question every day. From growing up on one of the poorest ...reservations in the US, to attending one of the most prestigious institutions in the U.S. taught me to never take things for granted. I defied the odds of fulling the stereotypes of Native Americans and used them as motivation for success.
Being Native American means more than checking a box; it is a way of life. My way of life, coming from the Apache Tribe, is being a warrior. A story is only as good as the writer makes it. I have a duty to pass down my story to the next generation of warriors." Cadet Bryan Dude, Class of 2018

U.S. Army Garrison West Point and Community,
Today is Thanksgiving. For many this holiday marks the beginning of the holiday season. It is a time when Americans at home and abroad gather with friends and family to reflect upon the blessings of the past year with gratitude and look to the future with hope.
President George Washington proclaimed on October 3, 1789, that Thanksgiving Day be designated a national holiday for the newly established United States of America, and the... date was set at November 26.
The observance, and date, of Thanksgiving went through many changes until President Abraham Lincoln, on October 3, 1863, declared Thanksgiving to be celebrated annually on the last Thursday in November.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt, breaking with the tradition President Lincoln set in 1863, set the date as the fourth Thursday in November as that year, November had five Thursdays. Finally on October 6, 1941, the U.S. Congress passed a joint resolution to officially create the federal holiday of Thanksgiving, and in December of that year, they fixed the date to the fourth Thursday of November.
For those of us who can sit down with loved ones this weekend, we are truly blessed. Not everyone will have this opportunity as many of our brothers and sisters in arms are deployed around the world.
This Thanksgiving, I ask that each of you take a moment to remember those who are separated and ask for their safe return. Their sacrifice makes it possible for others to know freedom from oppression and from fear; their sacrifice instills hope in the present and confidence for the future.
Here in our community, take this opportunity to give thanks to all of the Soldiers, Families, Civilians and Cadets who comprise this wonderful community - our Army Home. I truly believe this is the best Garrison in the Army and I thank all of you for your contributions in making it so.
I wish all a safe and happy Thanksgiving. Enjoy your well-deserved time with Family and friends.
