Section 508 Accessibility Initiative

Section 508 was originally added in 1986 to the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 to eliminate barriers in information technology, to make new opportunities for people with disabilities, and to encourage development of technologies that will assist people with disabilities. In 1998, Congress amended the Rehabilitation Act and strengthened provisions covering access to information in the Federal sector for people with disabilities. In 1998 Section 508 was amended by enacting the Federal Electronic and Information Technology Accessibility and Compliance Act as the new Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

As amended, Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act requires access to the Federal government's electronic and information technology. The law applies to all Federal agencies when they develop, procure, maintain, or use electronic and information technology. Federal agencies must ensure that this technology is accessible to employees and the public.

In compliance with Section 508, Installation Management Command (IMCOM) is dedicated to making all of our web pages accessible to all of our visitors. Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act can be found here: U.S. Department of Defense, Section 508.
