Today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Army Veteran Stephen Earle Buyer. Stephen served during the Persian Gulf War.

Stephen was born in Rensselaer, Indiana, in 1958, and grew up along the banks of the Tippecanoe River. In 1976, when he graduated from High School, Stephen entered The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina. After completing his officer's basic course in San Antonio, Texas, Stephen obtained a law degree from Valparaiso University School of Law while staying in ...the reserves.

Following law school, Stephen transferred to the Judge Advocate General Corps and went on active duty from 1984 to 1987. In the fall of 1990, Stephen was again called to active duty on three days notice to participate in Operation Desert Storm. During Desert Storm, he served as an Operational Law Judge Advocate, providing legal counsel to service units in combat zone. He also provided advice drawing from the Geneva Convention related to the treatment of Prisoners of War and refugees.

Stephen returned home in June 1991. The next November, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representative. He served as U.S. Representative for Indiana’s 5th district from 1992-2003, and U.S. Representative for Indiana’s 4th district from 2003-2011.

Today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Llewellyn H. Baxter.

He began his Air Force career at 18 in 1941 and trained as a navigator and bombardier.

In late 1942 he completed US Army Signal Corps training and was recruited to become a pilot. He was commissioned and began training to fly the B-24.

...

A short while later, he started flying combat missions over Germany. He was shot down over Germany, but managed to land his crippled bomber in Belgium. He was held in Germany as a Prisoner of War from November 1944 until May 1945.

Lew went on to fly missions and support troops in Korea and Vietnam.

He medically discharged from the Air Force in 1968.

Lew passed away in October 2010.

We honor his service.

Today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Army Veteran Alvie L. Brewer

Alvie L. Brewer served in the Army for 24 years on active duty and one year in the Reserve. During his military career he would see combat action across three wars: World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

Drafted into service, his initial days were challenging. He recalls being terribly homesick and the difficulty of getting through basic training. However his determination and desire to succeed eventuall...y saw him through. He was then sent to the Philippine Islands towards the end of the war as part of 1st Regiment, 6th Infantry Division. During the Korean War, he served with the 377th Transportation Truck Company. Alvie then went on to serve with the 1st Air Cavalry Division during the Vietnam War.

For his service across the three wars, he received numerous medals and citations including two Bronze Star Medals and Army Commendation Medal.

Thank you for your service, Alvie!

Today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Cesar Jesus Visurraga.

Cesar served in the Army from 2005 to 2013.

He was an Army Nurse Officer serving in Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

...

Cesar deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2007 with the 86th Combat Support Hospital. There he served as Head Nurse, Charge Nurse, and a critical care nurse.

After that experience, he went back to school to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. He currently serves proudly as a CRNA for the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Hershel “Woody” Williams does not remember most of the Battle of Iwo Jima.

After he took out the first pillbox, he does not remember how he returned to his station five more times over a period of four hours to retrieve serviced flamethrowers and continued to take out pillbox after pillbox. For those actions, Williams would be awarded the Medal of Honor. #HonoringVets
