NAVAL AIR SYSTEMS COMMAND, PATUXENT RIVER, Md. — Twenty-three up-and-coming leaders learned how NAVAIR fits into the larger defense picture at a seminar at NAVAIR’s Washington Liaison Office in Arlington, Virginia, Sept. 26-30.
The Washington arena seminar is the second in a series of five classes NAVAIR Leadership Development Program (NLDP) members take over a period of three to five years.
The seminar provided a practical introduction to the interaction and communication between NAVAIR, the Department of the Navy and Department of Defense organizations. Senior executive service members from NAVAIR, the Naval Sea Systems Command, the Office of Civilian Human Resources and the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations provided personal leadership perspectives, tied the lessons back to NAVAIR and offered mentoring support.
“The events and speakers provided insight and information that help me understand policy decisions and funding implications,” said Shaun Brown of Lakehurst, New Jersey. “The information and NAVAIR vision provided this week through multiple points of view is a tool I can take back to my command to better shape my programs and integrated project teams.”
During the seminar, participants learned about Emergenetics — a tool used to analyze individual thinking attributes — and how to problem solve. They also met with Dr. Charles B. Cushman Jr., author of “An Introduction to the U.S. Congress,” took a guided tour of the Pentagon and participated in a wellness activity focusing on energy.
“The big takeaway was understanding how NAVAIR and my competency fits in the big world of the Department of the Navy and Department of Defense,” said Evelyn Lim of Patuxent River. “NLDP offers a great networking opportunity, career-wise and work-wise. I now have a better understanding of Congress, its origin and how it works. The wellness section discussion and exercise was very helpful for my health, physically and mentally.”
