I'm Using TRICARE Young Adult

TRICARE Young Adult is a plan that adult children may qualify to purchase once they “age out” of regular TRICARE benefits. Because you’re purchasing extended coverage after your TRICARE benefit ends, you can’t switch to another TRICARE plan because you’re no longer eligible for any of the other TRICARE plans.

However, TRICARE Young Adult has two enrollment options: Prime and Standard. You may be able to switch enrollment options, depending on your sponsor’s military status and where you live.

If your sponsor is a(n)… Your Enrollment Options
Active Duty Service Member
  • In the U.S., you can use the Prime or Standard option wherever you live.
  • If overseas, you must be on accompanying orders and command-sponsored to use the Prime option
Retired Service Member
National Guard/Reserve Member

Sponsor is ActivatedCalled or ordered to active duty service for more than 30 days in a row.

  • In the U.S., you can use the Prime or Standard option wherever you live.
  • If overseas, you must be on accompanying orders and command-sponsored to use the Prime option

Sponsor isn’t Activated

  • Your sponsor must be covered by TRICARE Reserve Select
  • You can only use the Standard option

Sponsor is Retired

  • Your sponsor must be covered by TRICARE Retired Reserve
  • You can only use the Standard option

Switching Options

Within the Same Region

If you’re switching in the same region:

  • Your regional contractor won’t change.
  • Tell your contractor you want to switch options
  • Your contractor will simply adjust future premium payments to Prime or Standard

If Changing Options and Changing Regions

If you’re moving and want to switch options, you can only transfer your coverage if you’re current on your monthly premiums. To transfer and switch:
