The GCSS-Army Program is an Acquisition Category 1AM (ACAT 1AM) Major Automated Information System (MAIS) program. GCSS-Army is the primary tactical enabler of the Army’s sustainment transformation. The program consists of two components; a functional component for deployable forces called GCSS-Army and a technical enabler component called Army Enterprise Systems Integration Program (AESIP).

GCSS-Army is an evolutionary acquisition program as defined in Department of Defense Directive (DODD) 5000.01 (The Defense Acquisition System) and DoD Instruction (DODI) 5000.02, (Operation of the Defense Acquisition System) and defines, develops and produces and deploys an initial, militarily useful (and supportable) operational capability based upon proven technology, time-phased requirements, projected threat assessments, and demonstrated manufacturing capabilities in as short a time as possible.

The system will be developed in multiple increments as functional capabilities are defined and as integration and synchronization opportunities with related systems present opportunities for subsequent increments. The purpose of the enterprise system is to manage information associated with the execution of supply, maintenance, property accountability, and materiel management operations. GCSS-Army will also be financially compliant and is a key component for the Army Enterprise strategy to be financially auditable by the end of FY17. The enterprise system uses Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) software designed to be operated by users on COTS hardware in a Windows environment in accordance with Network Enterprise Technology Command (NETCOM) regulatory requirements. Computer hardware procured for the GCSS-Army Program to access the enterprise system will be materially the same hardware in use now to operate current logistics Standard Army Management Information Systems (STAMIS).
