Hearing screenings are covered under the well-child care benefit as follows:
- All infants should undergo hearing screening using Otoacoustic Emission (OAE) and/or Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) testing before one month of age, preferably before leaving the hospital.
- If not tested at birth, all infants should have a hearing screening before one month of age.
- An infant who does not pass the hearing screening should undergo appropriate hearing testing to confirm the presence of a hearing loss at no later than three months of age.
- Infants and children (through age 5) who are at high risk for hearing loss should undergo additional hearing evaluations in accordance with American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and Joint Commission on Infant Hearing (JCIH) guidelines.
For beneficiaries using TRICARE Standard and Extra, hearing screenings are covered for children through age 5 (only covered under the well-child care benefit).
For beneficiaries enrolled in TRICARE Prime, appropriate hearing screenings are covered for all children regardless of age.
