Notices to Navigation – Work on the Ohio and Kanawha Rivers

   Two Notices to Navigation were posted today:

  – Ohio River channel maintenance dredging in the Huntington District for the 2010 season will begin on or about Sept. 1, 2010. The cutterhead suction dredge BILL HOLMAN will begin dredging in the lower approach of Meldahl Locks, Ohio River, mile 436.2. – On or about Sept. 10, 2010, Amherst Madison will begin placing stone slope protection along the left descending bank of the Kanawha River, mile 61.3. The contractor’s floating plant will consist of the M/V LADY LOIS, one barge mounted crane, and one material barge. The M/V LADY LOIS will be monitoring marine channels 13 and 16. This work will be performed from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday with an anticipated completion date of Sept. 24, 2010. For more information, go to this link.

Beech Fork Lake Open for Swimmers Through Labor Day

   Summer is winding down, and the swimming pool at Beech Fork State Park is now closed, but swimmers do have another place where they can jump in the water – at Beech Fork Lake.

   The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers operates a swimming area at in Lavalette which is open from 10 a.m to 7 p.m. every day through Labor Day.

Notice to Navigation – Dredging Schedule for Ohio and Kanawha Rivers

   Here’s a Notice to Navigation – it’s a tentative schedule for channel maintenance dredging in the Ohio and Kanawha Rivers. You can also see the notice at this link.

 Ohio River channel maintenance dredging in the Huntington District for the 2010 season will be performed by contract with Luhr Brothers, Inc., Columbia, Illinois. On or about Sept. 1, 2010, the cutterhead suction dredge BILL HOLMAN will commence dredging in the lower approach of Meldahl Locks, Ohio River, mile 436.2. Approximately 30,000 cubic yards of material will be dredged at this location. The nearest known downstream municipal water intake is at Cincinnati OH., Ohio River, Mile 462.9.

The dredge will then proceed upstream. Successive dredge sites, quantity, mile points and nearest downstream municipal intakes are listed at the website. Dredging will be performed 24 hours a day, 7 days per week. The dredge BILL HOLMAN will monitor marine channel 13. A government dredge inspector will be in attendance at each site on arrival of the contractor’s crew and equipment.

Navigators are requested to be alert to the location of the dredge and its floating discharge pipeline. The dredge and attendant plant will be marked and lighted according to regulations. It is essential that navigators await the passing signal from the dredge prior to proceeding with caution.

Historic Vessel Moving Up the Ohio River

   Here’s something to watch for on the river: an LST-325.

   It’s a restored troop landing ship that was used in the D-Day invasion. It’s heading up the Ohio River right now. The photo shows the ship locking through Meldahl Locks and Dam at 4:45 am, Aug 23. 

    As I write this, the ship has just passed through Greenup Locks and Dam. If you’re along the river, watch for it!

Sutton Lake volunteers recognized

 Volunteers at Sutton Lake were recognized recently for their outstanding service.

So far this year, Sutton Lake’s 118 volunteers have provided over 20,000 hours of service, valued at almost $420,000 – and the year isn’t over!

Notice to Navigation – Dredging on the Ohio River

Notice is given that McGinnis, Inc. will commence dredging at the American Electric Power facility, located along the right descending bank of the Ohio River, mile 258 on or about Aug. 30, 2010.

The contractor’s floating plant will consist of the M/V ED MCGLAUGHLIN, one barge mounted crane, and two material barges. The M/V ED MCGLAUGHLIN will be monitoring marine channels 13, 16, and 28. The work will be performed 7 days/week from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and it is expected to be completed on or about Sept. 30. The dredged material will be disposed in an upland disposal area.

During non-working hours the contractor’s floating plant will be moored at the work site and lighted according to regulations.

Mariners are urged to exercise caution when transiting this area.
