Sustainable Design & Development

A policy memorandum was issued to improve high-performance green buildings standards on 27 October 2010. The policy:

  • establishes a comprehensive process that makes energy and sustainability considerations a fundamental part of every component of a new facility design, getting away from construction practices of the past, and incorporating new and innovative approaches, and
  • incorporates sustainable design and development principles, following guidance as detailed in the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Standard 189.1.

Through low-impact development (LID) strategies such as strategic siting, cool roofs, solar water heating, storm water management and water efficiency, the army will reduce its impact on the environment. While the benefits will vary based on location, preliminary analysis by the US Army Corps of Engineers indicates the energy savings over a standard building design will be 45% or greater.
